“How do you like it?”
“It’s good… yeah… I like it.”
“Cool, great.”
“And you, what do you think?”
“Nah.”
“Nah? Why?”
“I guess I was expecting more. The food looks great on Instagram, and, well, it is indeed well plated… or at least, it has the style of plating that I like. But the food does not level to the appearance.”
“Oh no. Why do you say that?”
“Well… it gives the wrong message, they are in different styles. It looks young and modern, but tastes conservative. Like, the meats are at least slightly overdone.”
“I did think the chicken was harder than I would like, but… I don’t know.”
“See? You noticed too! They are tough-ish because they cooked them for a bit, bit longer, so they lost more moist than desired. As both of them are on the same ‘welldoness’, it was probably not a mistake, a distraction of the grillardin, it is the way of the house.”
“Oh, but they tastes good, no?”
“Yes, they sure does. The produces are good, I can see they buy good stuff. But also very safe. Like… mayo with mustard and lime, smoked fish that tastes like bacon, potato purée with a good but mild cheese, asparagus and pesto… they taste great, but also super safe. I mean, people come up with these flavors for their Sunday meals. And are combinations that everybody like, even children, it’s standard, it’s safe.”
“Okay, I see what you mean, I agree.”
“And, well, maybe okay for weekdays lunch, but today is Saturday, we are paying à la carte, it’s not worth the price. Actually, even the €22 on weekdays… I wouldn’t come, there are way better places to eat for €22 on weekdays.”
“What about the egg. It was hard boiled, that’s a crime, right?”
“Totally! But it’s on the menu, they say it is ‘dur’, so they are consciously challenging a rule, I like that. Not sure what was the idea, how hard boiling makes it better. But it’s on the menu, guess it’s okay.”
“I see.”
“Oh! And the bread. Lord, no! In France? These are not acceptable at all. Nope, nope. Somewhere else, okay bread. Here, is a no, definitely a no.”
“Haha. Interesting. Yeah, really interesting. I never get to think of food like that.”
“I’m sure you see things like I would never imagine they could be seen too.”
